Questions
These questions have been provided to assist you in judging your road knowledge. Answer them and see how many you get right!
Q1. In order to move from the kerb and enter onto the roadway safely you must:
Signal for 3 seconds, check your rear vision mirror, right side mirror and over your left shoulder and move onto the road when it is safe.
Signal for 5 seconds, check your rear vision mirror, right side mirror and over your right shoulder and move onto the road when it is safe.
Signal for 2 seconds, check your right side mirror and accelerate into the traffic.
Q2. In order to move from the road and park your car safely at the kerb?
Signal to the left and quickly move over to the kerb before someone takes your parking spot.
Signal to the left, check your rear vision and left side mirrors, check over your left shoulder and move to the kerb when it is safe to do so.
Signal to the left, check your rear vision mirror and move to the kerb.
Q3. You are at an intersection controlled by traffic lights, which are red. You want to turn right. There is no right turn arrow and you are the lead car. The lights turn green and there are cars facing you on the other side of the road wanting to turn to their left and/or go straight. What are you required to do?
I must firstly check right and left before moving into the intersection. As I do not have priority, I must wait in the intersection with front wheels straight until there is a suitable safe gap in the oncoming traffic and complete the turn.
As I have priority I simply turn right once the light turns green.
I move into the intersection with my front wheels turned right ready to complete the turn.
Q4. What do you do if you are in the middle of an intersection waiting to turn right and the traffic lights turn from green to amber and then to red?
I put the car into reverse and move back as far as I can to clear the intersection as best I can.
I stay in the middle of the intersection and wait till my lights turn green again.
I wait for the oncoming traffic to commence to slow down in preparation to stop. Once it has been determined that the oncoming vehicles are stopping I can complete the turn with care. I cannot stay in the middle of the intersection as I will become a driving hazard.
Q5. You are in the left hand lane at a busy intersection with pedestrian crossings and controlled by traffic lights, which are red. You want to turn left. There is no left turn arrow and you are the lead car. The lights turn green and there are cars facing you on the other side of the road wanting to turn to their right. What are you required to do?
Accelerate quickly around the corner before any pedestrians can get onto the crossing.
Check right and left before attempting to complete the turn. I must wait for pedestrians to clear the pedestrian crossing before proceeding.
Turn when I can even if there are pedestrians on the crossings and I will cross in front of them.
Q6. What is the procedure to complete a satisfactory Hill Start.
Start engine and place car in 1 st gear (Drive if automatic), find "Friction Point" (around 1000 RPM) signal for 5 seconds, check rear and right side vision mirrors, check right side blind spot and move off onto road when it is safe to do so.
Start engine and put car in 1 st gear find "Friction Point" signal to the right and accelerate quickly onto road way.
Start engine and put car into Drive, signal to the right and accelerate quickly onto road way. You do not do a Hill Start in an Automatic car anyway because they don't roll back.
Q7. What must you do in order to change lanes/overtake another vehicle safely?
Simultaneously and quickly signal and check either your rear vision or side vision mirror and quickly change lanes.
Signal in the direction you will be moving, check your rear and appropriate side vision mirror, check your blind spot and brake to slow down while trying to safely change lanes.
Signal in the direction you will be moving, check your rear and appropriate side vision mirror, check your blind spot and change lanes once it is safe to do so.
Q8. Where must you stop when coming up to a Stop sign?
Just over the STOP line
At the STOP Sign and then move slowly up to the STOP line and go without stopping.
Approach the STOP line at the correct position, stop within 1 metre of the STOP line, check right and left and move off when it is safe. You may need to creep forward a little to have a clear view of the road.
You check right and left as you slowly approach the STOP sign and then accelerate through the intersection if there are no cars.
Q9. What is the difference between a Stop sign and a Give Way sign?
Nothing you treat them the same.
You only stop at a STOP sign if there are cars coming.
You must always stop at a STOP line but reduce your speed when approaching a GIVE WAY sign. If it is not safe for you to proceed through the intersection you must come to a stop at the GIVE WAY line until it is safe.
Q10. Who has priority at a Roundabout?
You must always give way to traffic on your right.
You must give way to traffic already on the roundabout, entering the roundabout or exiting the roundabout if there is a chance of a collision. You must drive defensively through a roundabout.
You must always come to a stop at a roundabout and give way to all traffic.
Q11. You are at a set of traffic lights that are red and you are waiting to turn left. There is a sign on the traffic light pole that says "LEFT TURN ON RED PERMITTED AFTER STOPPING". What must you do to turn left safely?
You must drive up to the stop line and stop within 1 metre of it. You then must wait for a good safe gap with 2 lanes closest to you clear and turn into the left lane when it is safe. If you want to turn into another lane, all lanes must have a good safe gap between you and other cars.
Roll up to the lights and accelerate around the corner into which ever lane you want.
As you approach the traffic lights slow down and stop well over the stop line and pedestrian crossing so that you can accelerate around the corner.
Q12. What must you do in order to overtake a parked vehicle so that there is at least 1 metre between the parked vehicle and your car?
Move out and around it as best you can.
You move as far over to the other side of the road so that you won't hit the car.
If you are going to move 1 metre or more you must signal to the right, check your rear and right side vision mirrors, check for oncoming traffic and proceed with caution.
Q13. Is it important that you signal your intention and check your mirrors and blind spot before changing your position on the road?
No never.
Only if you have time.
Yes. If you are going to move I metre or more you must signal your intention, check your rear and side vision mirrors and your blind spot before proceeding. If you are going to move less than 1 metre you do not have to signal your intention unless you are going to cross centre lines.
Q14. In the Driving Test what is the penalty if any of the wheels of the car hit a kerb?
You may be marked down as an error.
You will always fail the test.
Nothing provided you can convince the examiner that it was really just a pot hole.
Q15. In the Driving Test, what is the penalty if any of the wheels of the car leaves the road, eg mounts a kerb?
You will fail the test.
Nothing provided you can convince the examiner that it was really just a lump of wood or a rock you went over.
You are marked down as an error because the examiner knows it was an honest mistake and it could happen to anyone.
Q16. If you make 3 or more Observation or Signal errors during the Driving Test you will FAIL. True or False?
True.
False.
Depends on how I went with the rest of the test.
