Senior Drivers

At present, once a driver reaches 85 years of age, he/she is required to undertake a yearly driving test.

Although this test is not as arduous as that completed by learner drivers seeking to obtain their Provisional Drivers Licence, it is necessary to pass the test in order for them to retain their driver's licence.

If an aged driver fails their test, they will be issued with a Learner's Licence. Under the conditions of that licence, the aged driver can no longer drive a car without an unrestricted licence holder sitting in the passenger's seat. They can seek retesting on two more occasions.

Prior to undertaking the test, it is advisable for the aged driver to reacquaint themselves with the road rules and read the literature available from the RTA. The RTA has a publication titled "A Guide For Older Drivers". This publication is free of charge and can be obtained either from an RTA office or downloaded from the RTA's website www.myrta.com.au by following the links.

As part of their preparation, it is also advisable that aged drivers have a few driving lessons with a qualified driving instructor. This will help them brush up on their driving skills and become more aware of the testing requirements.
